How do I avoid or get rid of swelling on my face after a hair transplant?

Having just had a hair transplant is a relief for most people. You have finally taken the plunge after so many months or years of thinking about this. How do I avoid or get rid of swelling on my face and hair after a hair transplant? You can look forward to growing your new transplanted hair and your new look. In order to make sure you achieve the best possible result your should be very careful about looking after your transplanted hair to avoid swelling on your face and eyes.

How should I sleep for the first fourteen days after a transplant?

It’s important to sleep on your back with a neck pillow positioned under your neck.

This ensures even circulation and therefore even growth on both sides of the transplanted areas on the head.

Try to avoid sleeping on the side as this will disturb the grafted area.

How do I avoid swelling on my face and eyes after a hair transplant?

After a hair transplant it’s important to take prednisone tablets which your surgeon will give you. These will reduce swelling. It’s also important to remember to lie back as much as possible in the first four days after a transplant to make sure the fluid from surgery drains away from your face. You can easily do this by lying back on a sofa or arm chair.

What do I do if I have swelling on my eyes after a hair transplant?

Many people feel so elated after a hair transplant they forget to rest and take it easy and this can cause swelling on the face and eyes. If this happens don’t panic. This can happen and is temporary and rare it can last up to a week and can be very unsightly. Therefore to avoid swelling on the eyes after a hair transplant you should take it easy for a week. You can press a packet of frozen peas or an ice pack on your forehead to alleviate the swelling.

Can I touch the grafted area?

The straight answer is no you can’t touch the grafted area for around twelve days to two weeks. It is very delicate and you need to avoid disturbing the grafted area. If it feels itchy spray the area with cool boiled water every hour. The blood around the grafts will become dark and scabby. They will fall off around the days when they are ready.

The scabs act like a glue to hold the grafts into the recipient area in your new hair transplant.

When can I take my first hair wash?

You can sponge wash your hair by squeezing a sponge with warm water on your head and grafts. You cannot rub or massage your head for at least ten days whilst washing. The soapy water can be mixed in a jug and the sponge used to squeeze this over your hair.

Watch our patients hair transplant videos on this website which will demonstrate how to do your first hair wash!

If you continue to look after your grafts you will ensure you get the best possible result.
